Company Overview

Laglan Pastoral Company is an extensive cattle operation striving to produce the best possible results in today’s demanding market.

Charles & Grace Lund are the Directors & founders of Rathlyn Brahman Stud & Laglan Pastoral Co. Pty. Ltd. From humble beginnings this team has built an impressive stud & commercial operation.

It now includes approximately 410 000 acres of country in Central Queensland (separated into two management units). These properties carry approximately 20 000 head of cattle (depending on seasonal conditions).

Charles also oversees a significant cattle-trading operation, which includes approximately 10 000 head in feedlots year round. Company road trains assist with cattle movements between operations and with cartage of supplementary feed.

The company employs two Management Teams for the properties- Laglan/ St Albans and Yarmina . Approximately 20 staff are involved. Our staff includes a range of people with skills that are essential for looking after the well being of the cattle and implementing the ongoing maintenance and development of the properties.

Rathlyn Brahman Stud was registered in March 1974 and commenced with five head. Charles was early to recognise the potential impact of the Brahman bloodlines and decided to expand in this direction. At this time his family was based at Moura (Central Queensland) with business interests that included a garage, fuel distribution, a grazing property, trucks & machinery.

Charles and Grace made a courageous move in 1979 to buy “Laglan Station” amidst a drought and low cattle prices. The family relocated to “Laglan” and Charles oversaw the development of this property including: timber management, installation of waters and new fences. These practices have radically enhanced the outlook and carrying capacity of Laglan immensely.

Today Laglan runs an average of 15 000 head. This includes stud cattle, commercial breeders & backgrounding cattle. St Albans was purchased in 1999 and is run as part of the Laglan unit.

Rathlyn Brahman Stud is based at Laglan to this day.  This extensive stud consists of at least 12 single sired and several multi-sired herds. Some 100 cows are mated to Charolais bulls & we are pleasantly pleased with their progeny.

Sale cattle and selected paddock sale animals are now hosted at “Inta” Emerald. This allows for easier preparation and viewing of these animals. There are always paddock sale bulls available to be viewed at Laglan.

Embryo transfer and Artificial Insemination (AI) programs remain an integral part of our pursuit for excellence.

Mittagong Station (a breeder block in the QLD gulf) was bought  in 1993 & sold in 2006.  As the company has changed shape the decision was made  to focus attention on the Central Queensland properties.  We thank Neil & Sharon for their dedication over their time at Mittagong.

Tobermoray a picturesque porperty on the Queensland & Northern Teritory borders was purchased in 1993 & sold in 2001.

Yarmina Station was purchased in early 2001 and is situated on the Belyando River, north of Clermont. This backgrounding block contributes much in the growing & fattening of store cattle.

The business altered greatly on 26 February 2001. Charles incurred spinal injuries when the helicopter he was piloting crashed. True to form & with much determination Charles returned to “take the reigns” later that year. Charles & Grace now reside in Gracemere. Although family are now more involved, it is Charles who masterminds the business despite his physical limitations.

Peter & Joy Newman (nee Lund) are increasingly active in the management of the company & particularly Rathlyn Brahman Stud.

Laglan Pastoral Company continues to strive for excellence in breeding, performance & presentation. With sales of close to 40,000 head per year we continue to be a significant contributor to the cattle industry in Queensland.
